Master Customs uses a dedicated transition era so the mid-1990s platform changes do not get buried inside either W1 or W2. Model-year overlap is shown inside each generation page.
The first era established the front-drive W architecture across Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and later Chevrolet. It includes the original Regal, Cutlass Supreme and Grand Prix families plus the first Chevrolet Lumina.
The redesigned Lumina and revived Monte Carlo form a useful transition chapter: visually and mechanically they sit between the earliest W cars and the clean-sheet W2 family, while production timelines overlap both eras.
W2 modernized the platform around several of its most enthusiast-relevant cars: the Grand Prix, Regal, Intrigue, Impala and Monte Carlo, with the supercharged 3800 becoming the era’s defining performance engine.
W3 carries the platform through the last supercharged 3800 Grand Prix, the LS4 V8 era, and the later high-output Impala before fleet-only Impala Limited production finally closes the W-body story.
