How the enthusiast story developed
The SS remains the factory performance model. 2009 is the final model year for the V8 Impala SS.
Post-SS years emphasize V6 models; enthusiast interest shifts from factory trim identity toward clean chassis condition and swap/upgrade potential.
A major powertrain update brings the 3.6L direct-injected V6 with about 300 hp and a six-speed automatic, making later cars materially quicker and more modern mechanically.
The old-body car continues for fleet customers as Impala Limited alongside the new-generation retail Impala. 2016 closes out W-body production.

What matters now
SS is the collector focus
The 2006–2009 SS combines the LS4 with the practical four-door Impala body and remains the most obvious performance target.
Do not ignore 2012+ cars
The later 3.6L/six-speed combination is not an SS, but its output and drivability make it one of the strongest non-V8 W-body factory configurations.
Fleet history matters
Impala Limited cars may have hard service lives. Maintenance records, idle hours, suspension condition and interior wear can tell more than odometer mileage alone.
