Chevrolet joins W1—and creates the Z34
The Lumina arrived for 1990 as Chevrolet’s W-body sedan and coupe. It ranged from fleet-friendly four-cylinder models to the distinctive Euro and the 3.4 DOHC Z34 coupe.

Lumina Z34
The Z34 transformed the Lumina coupe with deep fascias, hood louvers, rocker cladding, spoiler, sport suspension and the LQ1 24-valve DOHC V6. From 1991–1993 it could be paired with the Getrag 284 five-speed manual; automatic cars used the electronic four-speed.

1990–1994 chronology
Z34 arrives with 3.4L DOHC LQ1, sport chassis and unique bodywork; manual transmission available.
ABS availability expands; the LQ1 becomes available in Euro sedan form with automatic transmission.
2.2L four-cylinder replaces the 2.5L in base sedans; coupes become V6-only.
All Luminas are V6-powered; electronically controlled four-speed automatic is standard across the line. Final W1 Lumina year.

Passive restraint note: unlike several W1 siblings that moved into airbags during the mid-1990s, the 1990–1994 Lumina retained door-mounted passive front shoulder belts through the end of its first generation.
