Buick Regal
Buick’s first front-drive Regal transformed the nameplate from rear-drive personal luxury into a sophisticated W-body coupe and sedan—then gave the platform one of its most durable engines: the 3800.
Buick makes the W-body refined
The Regal was one of the three original W-body launches for 1988. It began as a coupe, added a four-door sedan for 1990, and steadily shifted from GM’s 60-degree V6 toward Buick’s torquier 3800.
What changed
- 1988–1989: coupe-only launch era with the 2.8L V6; 3.1L arrives during the early run.
- 1990: sedan joins the range; 3.1L V6 is the mainstream engine.
- 1991: 3800 V6 becomes the premium powertrain, rated around 170 hp.
- 1994: base V6 moves to the 3100 SFI family at roughly 160 hp; driver airbag era begins.
- 1995: redesigned dashboard adds passenger-side airbag.
- 1996: 3800 Series II L36 arrives at 205 hp for the final W1 Regal year.
Gran Sport / GS
The Gran Sport was Buick’s enthusiast-oriented W1 Regal. It paired the Regal’s comfort-first personality with firmer chassis tuning, visual differentiation and, in later years, the 3800 V6. The 1996 205-hp Series II car is the strongest naturally aspirated W1 Regal factory combination.
This is not the supercharged L67 GS that arrived with the redesigned 1997 Regal; that car belongs to W2.

What enthusiasts should watch
Age before mileage
Rubber mounts, vacuum lines, cooling components, weatherstrips and electrical grounds can matter more than odometer reading on a survivor.
3800 is the draw
For an enthusiast Regal, the 1991–1996 3800 cars are the distinctive choice; 1996 is especially notable for the Series II.
Coupe scarcity
Late Regal coupes are substantially less common than sedans, making clean GS coupes a worthwhile preservation target.
Regal Gran Sport
The GS coupe gets its own deep-dive reference, including 3800 evolution and the 205-hp 1996 Series II finale.
Specifications vary by model year, body style, trim and RPO. Master Customs treats factory literature as the primary reference and uses period reviews and established W-body technical resources for context. Always verify a specific car by VIN/RPO and service information before ordering parts.
