The 442 appears as an appearance/handling-oriented package on the downsized Cutlass Salon. Engine availability varies with regular Cutlass powertrains, so these cars should not be treated as mechanically equivalent to the later W-30 or W42 performance cars.
Oldsmobile 442
The G-body 442 spans two different eras: an early downsized package culminating in the 1980 W-30 350, then a more cohesive 1985–1987 revival that directly succeeds the Lightning Rod Hurst/Olds.
Two chapters, one performance name.
Master Customs includes the early 1978–1980 442 history for continuity, but the deeper enthusiast focus is the 1985–1987 W42 run because it shares the VIN-9 307/200-4R performance foundation with the 1983–1984 Hurst/Olds.
The 442 moves to the Cutlass Calais and regains substantial performance content with the Oldsmobile 350 four-barrel V8. Only 886 were produced, making it one of the rarer factory G-body Oldsmobiles.
The 442 disappears while Hurst/Olds takes the performance spotlight in 1983–1984.
The revived 442 replaces Hurst/Olds, using the VIN-9 307 H.O., 200-4R overdrive, performance gearing, dual exhaust and distinctive graphics/trim. Output is commonly listed at 180 hp.
The 307 H.O. receives roller-cam/swirl-port updates; published ratings fall to about 170 hp while low-speed torque improves. The transmission calibration changes from the earlier OZ-code performance unit to the later KZF version.
The final rear-drive G-body 442 season. The core 307 H.O./200-4R formula continues, closing the traditional Cutlass performance chapter before the name moves fully into front-drive territory.
The Hurst/Olds mechanical idea without the Hurst name.
VIN-9 307 H.O.
The high-output Oldsmobile 307 differentiates these cars from ordinary Cutlass powertrains and is central to correct identification.
200-4R & gearing
Overdrive made aggressive axle gearing practical on the street. Transmission code and axle hardware deserve the same inspection attention as the engine.
Factory package integrity
Stripes, wheels and emblems are easy to clone. Engine code, RPO data, transmission/rear-axle identification and documentation are more important than cosmetics alone.
Master Customs treats period factory literature and marque-specialist documentation as the baseline and separates factory configuration from enthusiast modification. Oldsmobile used multiple Cutlass series, option packages and drivetrain codes during this era, so verify a specific car by VIN, RPO/build documentation, engine/transmission codes and original literature before ordering restoration or performance parts.
